Open Letter to the Government of Suriname regarding Bitcoin
Theme: “Create solid legislation and adopt a Bitcoin standard, or risk falling behind this global technological development”.
Greetings His Excellency Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk,
The hope, growth and future of Suriname lies in the hands of the current generation!
I am a proud and driven Surinamese with a global vision, because I like to travel and remain impressed by different cultures, and what sustains and organizes those cultures and communities. This is also the reason why I, as a Surinamese world citizen, am a great supporter of Bitcoin (BTC) and other similar digital currencies, such as Ripple (XRP) and Ether (ETH).
I address you, His Excellency and “Father” of Suriname, to urge the Surinamese government and the Council of Ministers to pursue economic independence and financial sovereignty for every hardworking citizen or Surinamese resident, by pursuing and developing a national Bitcoin standard in the general interest. Because soon every country at the highest political and financial level will be confronted with this decision, but those who proactively seize the present moment, as we have just seen in El Salvador, will enjoy significant benefits worldwide far into the future.
It is no secret that the current global and local economic and health crisis is worrying and unsustainable. Unfortunately, it is regrettable that no solid and sustainable opportunities are created, so that resourceful and righteous Surinamese, such as myself, who believe and trust in their own abilities, must also leave the fate of the economy in the hands of global central bankers and/or influential domestic or foreign financial institutions, who do not represent and safeguard the interests of the Surinamese people.
Despite the many challenges, limitations and obstacles that we as a country collectively face, the resilience of fellow Surinamese brothers and sisters continues to inspire the creation of admirable and fascinating works. Surinamese society enjoys many favorable advantages over many of its neighbors, due to its geographic location, abundant natural resources, diversity in culture, and the scale of its population density. However, even greater opportunities await beyond the scope of the aforementioned characteristics, with the adoption of national and collective action, in favor of a Bitcoin standard.
The tone of this letter is intended to convey the urgency of such a standard, both in terms of the current & impending economic desperation, as well as the very limited ability to seize this opportunity with extraordinary boldness and strong leadership. While the challenges of COVID-19 and increased global unrest continue to strike fear into the hearts and minds of citizens everywhere, Surinamese can claim international greatness, not only within the world of sports, but also within the financial world order. We can make a powerful mark, by seizing this “once in a lifetime” opportunity that our unique times demand.
Nations such as Iran, Russia, and China have reportedly “mined” or otherwise utilized Bitcoin as a means to circumvent severe economic sanctions imposed by major powers that prevented them from fully participating in the global financial system. Other countries such as Barbados, Singapore, Curacao, and Malta have made the move to become “Bitcoin friendly” in an effort to attract financial resources and human capital through migration. Research has shown that immigrants are more likely to carry Bitcoin due to the key attributes it offers to this group in particular. To add to the list of “Bitcoin friendly” countries, El Salvador is the world’s first country to require merchants to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender. If I may represent the entire Surinamese cryptocurrency community, I propose taking a similar aggressive approach with tact and skill, possibly with support, and/or in collaboration with legitimate Bitcoin ambassadors and/or digital currency traders. A national and collective acceptance of Bitcoin can ensure that every sector within the Surinamese economy can be significantly strengthened, with the result that the spirit of every Surinamese at home and abroad could be revived.
The course and development of Bitcoin is not controlled, managed or exploited by the human factor, which can help reduce and combat corruption. In fact, its mechanism and links depend on the global supply and demand principle, which is now the case with our Surinamese Dollar (SRD) at a local level, from which only a handful of individuals will benefit.
Bitcoin and blockchain technology is an innovation and development that will surpass the rise of the automotive industry or the internet in terms of its impact on humanity. Suriname and its rulers do not need to ask permission from another country or institution, nor acquire a license or enter into a trade agreement with a company to reform its economy with Bitcoin, with the ultimate goal of growth, prosperity and well-being for every citizen. All that is needed is strong leadership, political will and courage, a vision for a new future and an allocation of its own national resources to pursue a Bitcoin standard.
The most important and crucial reason to urgently pursue and implement a national adoption plan is the fixed and programmed supply of Bitcoin in circulation. There will only be 21 million Bitcoin in circulation after all are “mined”. This hard limit, which can never be manipulated or increased on the supply, due to the preset mathematical algorithms, makes Bitcoin arguably more valuable than the precious metal gold.
Since this simple but unique property of scarcity is generally understood by many traditional economists and accountants, the economic laws of supply and demand will create a global rush to acquire as much Bitcoin as possible, before it is too late. And this momentum for acquiring Bitcoin is already underway all over the world and is accelerating rapidly.
In recent months, the ongoing global economic turmoil, (hyper)inflation and blood-curdling uncertainty about the financial establishment have led to an increased curiosity about Bitcoin. Several institutional investors and financial institutions have announced significant Bitcoin allocations to their portfolios. In fact, some call it an ideal and effective hedge against a weakening US dollar (USD).
The Surinamese government, like every other government in the world, has a once-in-a-hundred-years opportunity to claim global prominence by seizing this unique opportunity. Many other politicians in Latin America and the Caribbean have made their intentions clear to pursue similar steps as El Salvador.
By leading the next and coming global financial shift, Suriname can create prosperity, well-being and financial freedom for all its citizens, in a way that does not require elections and resistance. Such a setup may seem too good to be true, and these ambitions, visions and applications certainly require thorough and careful research and require a debate at the national level in the House of the Country or The National Assembly (DNA).
In contrast, a lack of clear action and a delay in pursuing a national plan for Bitcoin (BTC) adoption will risk a scenario where Suriname will once again be left behind since the invention of the internet, once again excluding its citizens from the opportunity for significant wealth creation and preservation.
As world leaders, like yourself, become more aware of the opportunity to make history, the pursuit of Bitcoin adoption and integration will increase significantly. We, as the Cryptocurrency community, offer you our full support, and the willingness to voluntarily consult for any involvement, to activate every resource available to us, so that Suriname can be one of the few “first-movers” pursuing a Bitcoin standard.
We must never be the last again. #SurinameFirst
A sincere and hopeful crypto-Surinamese.
